Android 9 Pie update has already been available for Google Pixel/Pixel XL, Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL and Essential phone. Google and Essential starts rolling out the OTA (over the air) update. Android 9 Pie system images and OTA files are also available for manual update.

Devices that participated in the Android P Beta program (devices from Sony, Xiaomi, Nokia, Oppo, Vivo and OnePlus) will receive this update by December 2018 or early 2019. Android One powered devices like Xiaomi Mi A2, and latest devices from Samsung, Huawei, HTC, LG, etc will also get the update eventually. If you updated your phone to Android Pie (Android 9.0.0) and looking a way to hide some icons from the status bar, here is a simple guide on that. It does not require root access on the phone. To clean up status bar (hide icons), first you need to enable System UI Tuner. The old method won’t work with Android Pie, so here we use an alternate method to enable System UI Tuner.

How to hide status bar icon on Android 9 Pie

  1. First, install Nova Launcher from Play store and set it as your default launcher
  2. Long press on the Home button and tap on “Widget” option
  3. Choose “Activity”, scroll down, tap on “System UI”.
  4. Select “System UI demo mode” widget.
  5. Open the widget, and in the options, select “Status bar”.
  6. To turn off any status bar icon, turn off the toggle switch next to it. Note that you cannot hide battery and time icons from the status bar in this way, for obvious reason.
